Mandara Kankidan, Tea & Nishiki Biwa

SPECIAL EVENT Saturday, July 11, 2026 | 16:00–18:00

MANDARACHA is pleased to present a special event in collaboration with KIYONAGA, the contemporary confectionery brand created by Kyoto's renowned confectioner Kameya Kiyonaga, established in 1617. We are also honored to welcome Nishiki Biwa performer Suiken Kawamura for an afternoon celebrating sweetness, tea, and music.

At the heart of this event is the presentation of the "Mandara Kankidan", a new confection that brings together "Seijō Kankidan", one of Japan's oldest surviving sweets, and the "Modak", the sacred sweet traditionally held by the deity Ganesha.

Seijō Kankidan is a historic confection believed to have been introduced to Japan from Tang China during the Nara period. Seven traditional aromatic ingredients, symbolizing purification, are blended into a smooth sweet bean filling, wrapped in dough, and carefully fried in pure sesame oil. Preserved for more than 1,200 years, it stands as one of the earliest expressions of Japan's confectionery culture.

Its distinctive shape is equally meaningful. The eight folds represent the petals of the lotus flower and evoke the mandala, a symbol of universal truth and enlightenment.

During the first part of the event, Mr. Maegawa of KIYONAGA will share the story behind the creation of the Mandara Kankidan and the inspiration that guided its development. Guests will then enjoy a tasting accompanied by a tea specially curated by MANDARACHA to complement the confection.

The second part of the afternoon will feature a performance by Suiken Kawamura on the Nishiki Biwa. Centered on the themes of joy and harmony, the program will include beloved Japanese melodies as well as original compositions dedicated to Amaterasu, Kankiten, and Benzaiten.

During the intermission, guests will also be served AWACHA™, MANDARACHA's signature nitrogen tea.

Join us for a unique afternoon where centuries-old confectionery heritage, the world of tea, and the resonant sound of the biwa come together in celebration.

We look forward to sharing this moment of joy and harmony with you.
