About this session
Alexandre Nicolau is the founder of MANDARACHA™, a Japanese tea house and cultural space in Kyoto. Originally trained in chemistry and engineering, he has lived and worked in Asia for more than two decades and developed his passion for tea while working in China in 2005.
He founded MANDARACHA in 2019 with the aim of sharing the extraordinary diversity of Japanese tea and reconnecting it with culture, craftsmanship and everyday life. Working closely with small tea producers throughout Japan, MANDARACHA promotes distinctive regional teas, sustainable agriculture and traditional knowledge, while also exploring new ways of experiencing tea.
Inspired by Zen philosophy and its long relationship with tea in Japan, Alexandre sees tea as more than a beverage: a meeting point between nature, people, history, spirituality, art and science.
